Selecting Your Seedlings

Selecting the right crops, and the right number of these crops, will help you grow a successful garden any time of the year, inside or out. Consider the following before making your selections.

How many seedlings do you need?

There are two different Tower Gardens. The FLEX and the HOME.

  • The FLEX has 20 regular growing spaces.
  • The HOME has 32 growing spaces. 16 regular and 16 baby greens spaces.

There is also the Family Garden.

  • The Family Garden is three FLEX Tower Gardens, each with a regular extension for a total of 84 regular growing spaces.

There are three different extension kits.

  • The Regular Extension has 8 regular growing spaces.
  • The Baby Greens Extension has 32 baby greens growing spaces.
  • The Combo Extension has 4 regular growing spaces and 16 baby greens growing spaces.

Do the crops need to be pollinated?

Pollination needs to occur for most fruiting crops to set fruit. There are a few exceptions and you can view these crops on our website.

Most of you will not have bees and other pollinating insects inside your home or screen room, therefore you will need to be the bee if growing inside.

A pollination video can be found on the seedling page for each crop that needs to be pollinated, under product videos.

Consider this when selecting what crops you will grow.

How large are the crops?

We don't recommend growing large vines and indeterminate tomatoes inside. These crops can grow in excess of 8ft in length and you will struggle to provide enough light for these crops.

We also recommend growing no more than 4 large plants per Tower Garden when growing outside. Too many large plants can make it unmanageable and in turn become a breeding ground for pests and disease.

The the crop size filter can be used to determine the size of the crop.

How many of each crop do you need?

It may take a couple of growing cycles to get these quantities right. The following quantities are a good place to start.

  • Celery - 1-2
  • Cucumbers – 1
  • Peppers - 1- 2 of each variety
  • Eggplant – 1
  • Green Beans – 4+
  • Greens - 1 of each variety
  • Herbs - 1 of each variety
  • Lettuce - 6-8 for a salad every day
  • Melons – 1-2 of each variety
  • Sugar Snap Peas – 4+
  • Squash of each variety - 1
  • Tomatoes (cherry) – 1
  • Tomatoes (regular)-1
  • Tomatoes (beefsteak) – 1

If you juice a particular vegetable or herb every day you will need to adjust quantities accordingly.
