Frequently Asked Questions

Tower Garden

Do I need to be an experienced Gardener?

No! ANYONE can grow a Tower Garden. There are videos, growing guides, and forums to help you on your journey. We are also working out the details to hold online workshops that you can attend for free when you purchase your Tower through us! Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

How many plants can I grow in a Tower Garden?

You can grow 20 plants in the standard Tower Garden FLEX. This can be extended to 28 with an Extension Kit, 40 with a Combo Extension Kit or 52 with a Baby Greens Extension Kit, all while using the same water, same space and same electric. A Tower Garden HOME can grow up to 32 plants. Commercial Tower Farms can grow up to 52 plants per Tower.

What can I grow in a Tower Garden?

Anything that grows above the ground, excluding bushes, trees and grapevines can be grown in a Tower.  This includes lettuces, herbs, greens, squash, tomatoes, melons, beans, strawberries and more.

Can I grow year-round in Tower Garden?

YES! The Tower extends your growing season so you can grow further into the summer and winter than you would in the soil. You can also grow year-round inside your home with the Tower Garden Indoor Grow Light Kit.

Where do the plants get their nutrients?

It took years of development and support from the worlds leading experts in plant and human nutrition to develop the proprietary Tower Tonic used in the Tower Garden. This nutrient rich plant food is the worlds first high performance ionic mineral solution specifically designed to grow all types of food and flowering crops. Unlike conventional hydroponic fertilizers, these natural minerals can grow everything from gourmet lettuce and edible flowers to beautiful vine-ripened tomatoes without needing additional additives.

How do I know that the plants grown in a Tower Garden are nutritious?

A study was completed at the University of Mississippi comparing field grown and aeroponically grown (Tower Garden®)produce and it was published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine. They found that “in conclusion, the study reveals that plants grown in aeroponic systems show a higher product yield and comparable antioxidant properties (using DPPH and cell-based assays) to those grown in the soil.”

How many hours of sunlight does it need?

Fruits and vegetables need UV light to survive, whether that comes from the sun or grow lights. Leafy greens, lettuce, and herbs need at least 5 hours of direct sunlight. Fruiting crops like tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, and peppers need 8 hours or more. Think of it this way, the more hours of sun they have, the faster they will grow, the more produce you’ll have! If you don’t have enough direct sun, you can grow inside with the Tower Garden®Indoor Grow Light Kit.

Can I order Tower Garden accessories and seedlings together?

Tower Gardens are shipped from the Warehouse in Tennessee and the seedlings, pesticides and accessories we stock are shipped from our farm in Florida. You may need to place two seperate orders.

Seeds and Seedlings

Are your seedlings grown from non-GMO and/or organic seeds?

All of the seeds are non-GMO and we use organic seeds whenever possible.

Are the seedlings you sell Certified Organic?

The seedlings we sell are not Certified Organic but we only use pesticides and fungicides that are certified for use in organic gardening.

Do you use any synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fungicides on your seedlings?

We do not use any synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fungicides at Living Towers. Although we are not organically certified, everything is grown to Organic standards

When I purchase your seedlings are they ready to go straight into the Tower Garden, Lettuce Grow, or traditional garden?

Yes. Seedlings purchased from Living Towers are grown in the same rockwool that comes with your Tower Garden and are ready to be transplanted on receipt.

Can the seedlings be used in other Hydroponic/Aeroponic systems?

Yes! Many customers plant them in the Lettuce Grow Farmstand. If 1.5" rockwool cubes can fit in your system, you can use our seedlings.

Can the seedlings be planted in a soil garden?

Yes! You can plant our seedlings in a soil garden. Ensure the rockwool is covered with soil and the seedlings are watered throughly and frequently.

Do I have to thin out the sprouts?

Not at all!  We ship seedlings that are ready to go in the Tower Garden.  No thinning required!  We seed with the right number of seeds, or a few more if the seed has lower germination rates, and we will remove any extra sprouts before shipping.  Each variety will have a minimum number of sprouts per rockwool cube on the product page.

Why are some varieties out of stock and when do you restock them?

Seeds germinate and crops grow at different rates. We do our best to keep up with demand but when large quantities of a particular crop are purchased they may be out of stock until the inventory is updated at 5pm Eastern and Sunday and Tuesday. Make your purchase close to this time to get the best selection.

To be notified when a seedling is in stock, head over to the seedlings product page and click "Notify me when available". You'll be able to enter your email address and will be notified via email when the we add inventory to the website.

Do you guarantee your seedlings?

Yes. Living Towers Florida Keys only ships strong healthy seedlings, however, they can sometimes be damaged in transit. There are many external factors that seedlings may be exposed to after delivery, that Living Towers Florida Keys is not responsible for, can affect and ultimately kill them. We therefore guarantee them for 48 hours. These factors are, but not limited to, extreme heat, extreme cold, insufficient water, insufficient UV light, pests, insufficient nutrients, pH balance. The terms and conditions of sale, which you agree to when you submit your order, can be found on our website and in the shipping notification email that we send the day the seedlings are shipped. Please read the terms and conditions for more information and specific information on how to notify us.

Where can I find information on how to start seedlings successfully?

Check out the How to Start Seedlings for the Tower Garden video, contact your Tower Garden Representative or contact Tower Garden Customer Care on 866-235-0414.

Shipping

How much is shipping?

Shipping varies based on the number of seedlings purchased and is calculated at checkout.  We do our best to keep shipping prices as low as possible. As they are seedlings we must assure they arrive in a timely manner or they will be weak, if they make it at all.  We also use specially designed packaging to reduce the chance of them being damaged in transit.  This unfortunately comes at a cost. However, you will find our prices are extremely competitive.

Where do you ship seedlings?

We are able to ship seedlings to physical addresses in the lower 48 contiguous states only.

How are your seedlings shipped?

We use UPS and FedEx. Shipping methods that are available for your address will be shown at checkout. The tracking number will be emailed to you when your order ships.

How long do they take to arrive?

Transit time depends on the service selected at checkout.  We now offer both UPS and FedEx, depending on the number of seedlings ordered and the destination address. Only shipping options that will arrive in 2 days or less will be offered at checkout. This gives us a buffer in case there is a carrier delay.

Do you offer Next Day delivery?

Next Day shipping will be shown at checkout if it is available for your shipping address. Please remember that we only ship on Mondays and Wednesdays so if you order on Thursday and select Next Day as the shipping method your order will ship on Monday and be delivered Tuesday. The ship day and expected delivery day options are shown at checkout.

I missed the deadline to have my order shipped tomorrow/today.  What can I do?

It is possible to expedite your order even if you missed the 5pm ET cutoff, for an additional fee of $10 per box. If this option is available you will see it at checkout. Every order is hand picked and inspected shortly after the order is received. Plant identification tags are sorted, shipping labels are printed and each order is inspected again before it is hand packed and shipped. The cutoff time ensures we are able to pack all orders before the carrier picks up the orders.

When will my order ship?

We ship on Mondays and Wednesdays only. Orders must be placed before 5pm Eastern on Sunday to ship on Monday or placed by 5pm Eastern on Tuesday to ship on Wednesday. Every order is hand picked and inspected, the seedling tags are hand picked and shipping labels printed. On shipping day your order is inspected and hand packed.

If you missed the cutoff, expedited/same day processing may be available at checkout for an additional $10 per box.

Will I receive email confirmations after I place an order?

You will receive order confirmation emails and status update emails from sales@livingtowers.com.  They also contain instructions on how to care for your seedlings and what to do in the unlikely event that seedlings are damaged. Please ensure sales@livingtowers.com is added as a contact or added to your spam filter so that you receive these notification emails. We are not responsible for damages caused by delayed pick ups. Please remember you are purchasing live plants. They can be damaged and possibly die if they are left one the doorstep, awaiting pickup overnight.

Is it possible to delay my order?

We are able to delay an order for up to one week, providing the shipping label has not been created. However, we are unable to guarantee all items you ordered will be available.

My seedlings took longer than expected to arrive or the box arrived a little beat up. What should I do?

On rare occasions the seedlings can take longer than expected to arrive or get a little beat up along the way. Simply snap a picture of the seedlings (and box if the box is clearly damaged) and email it to sales@livingtowers.com within 48 hours of receipt. Seedlings go into a somewhat dormant state while in a dark box and do not always need to be replaced if they arrive a few days late. There are many factors that affect this including variety, and temperatures. While delays are out of our control, we will happily replace, refund or offer a credit as needed (subject to the number of seedlings affected).  If your order hasn't arrived after 5 days, please contact us at the email address above. Please see our terms and conditions for full details.

I haven't received a tracking number. What should I do?

First check your spam or junk folder as it may have ended up in there. You can also login to your account at www.livingtowerseedlings.com. If you still cannot find it please email sales@livingtowers.com as there may have been an error in your email address. As they are Live Plantsit is important that you periodically track them. Living Towers Florida Keys is not responsible for damages that occur if they are not retrieved on delivery day.

My tracking says my order was delivered, but I cannot locate it.  What should I do?

Double check your property in case the driver left it behind a bush, gate or other area hidden from the street. Both FedEx and UPS now provide a photo of the package at delivery. If you cannot locate the package and/or the home in the picture is not your address you must contact the carrier to start a trace.  Traces must be initiated within 7 days of delivery.  If a trace is not initiated within this time frame we are unable to replace your order.

After contacting the carrier please email sales@livingtowers.com. Please confirm your shipping address and include your order number. We will then begin an investigation.

The shipping address on my order is incorrect. What can I do?

If your order has not yet shipped, please call (305) 986-0803 so that we can update the address on your order.

If your order has shipped we can update the address with the carrier, subject to an address correction fee (FedEx $18, UPS $10).

If your order was delivered to the address provided we are unable reship or redeliver the order and you will need to place a replacement order on our website.

Caring for Your Seedlings

My seedlings arrived and they appear a little yellow in color. Is this normal?

Yes. Your seedlings have spent between a few days in a box, without exposure to UV light, so expect them to arrive a little yellow in color. This is especially true of the "seed" leaves. These are the first leaves that sprout when the seed germinates. A yellow or brown leaf or two can be expected too. To avoid excessive algae our seedlings are not watered with mineral water every day. If your seedlings are completely brown or wilted, please contact us within 48 hours of receipt as this is not normal. We will happily replace, refund or offer a credit for these seedlings (subject to the number of seedlings affected). Please see our terms and conditions for full details.

What are "Seed Leaves"?

Seed leaves are the first leaves to appear when a seed germinates. They are usually a different shape, and are generally smooth and simpler in structure than the ‘True’ leaves. The second set of leaves to appear are the ‘True’ leaves, and these look like miniature versions of the leaves on the full size plant. Once the true leaves appear, the seed leaves turn yellow, brown, dry up and fall off. This can alarm newer growers but it's nothing to be alarmed by. It's a normal part of the leaf life.

How will I know which seedling is which?

We include one plant tag per variety with your seedlings.  We do our best to secure them but they can sometimes move around in transit.  If you have any troubles recognizing plants please take a picture of the seedlings and sentthem along with your order number to sales@livingtowers.com and we will identify them for you!

I am unable to plant my seedlings in my Tower Garden/garden immediately. How long can they survive without being planted in the Tower Garden/soil?

With the exception of lettuce, you can hold your seedlings for weeks without planting them in your Tower Garden/garden. Lettuce gets tougher and bitter as it gets older and this will happen whether it is in the Tower Garden/garden or not. Providing your seedlings are exposed to UV light (minimum of 5 hours) put them in a shallow tray with a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of clean water each morning, use pH balanced nutrient water once a week, they will be fine for weeks (lettuce no more than a week).

It is very cold/hot where I live. Can I keep the seedlings indoors?

No no no! This is a common mistake. Seedlings may be small but they are actually much more resilient than we give them credit for.  All plants require UV light and without it they will grow long and stretch in search of UV light. Once a plants starts to do this there is no turning the clock back.

If it is still very cold put the plants outside in a sunny location during the day and bring them back inside in the evening. If it is very hot, place them outside in a location where they will get about 5 hours of morning sun.  If you are unable to bring them in (many of us have those things called jobs) then ensure you put them in a shallow tray with a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of clean water each morning.

What about inside a sunny window? Can I keep my seedlings there until I am ready to put them into my Tower Garden/garden/other system?

More than likely, no.  Most modern windows in homes have UV filters on them.  These filters filter out the UV light that the plants need.  Your plants will stretch in search of UV light and there is no reversing this once it happens.  There are still some windows out there, and those found in specially designed sunrooms, that do not have UV filters on them and it is ok to put your seedlings by these windows.

Can I use tap water to fill my Tower Garden?

You may use tap water but you MUST filter city water and never use water softened with sodium.  The city water at our farm is heavily chlorinated so we filter the water we use to grow seedlings.  Our seedlings have never been exposed to chlorine/chloramine, so while you may not have filtered city water in the past it is important to do so when growing our seedlings.  Chlorine by itself is generally not a problem.  However, when you add in the stress of shipping, high temperatures, high winds, transplanting etc these stressors compound and can have a detrimental effect on seedlings.

What is Chlorine/Chloramine?

Municipalities add either chlorine or chloramine to disinfect the water.  Many of you are familiar with chlorine as it is the chemical most commonly used to disinfect and kill bacteria in swimming pools.  As you may know, chlorine has to be added often as it dissipates and levels drop. It takes about 24-48 hours for chlorine to dissipate from a bucket of water in full sun.  If your city adds chlorine to their water and you used this to fill your tower garden, the chlorine would have dissipated in approximately 24-48 hours. Many municipalities now use chloramine to disinfect their water.  Chloramine is a mixture of chlorine and ammonia and it doesn't dissipate very quickly at all. This means the city doesn't have to add it as often to keep the levels high enough to kill bacteria.  You can find out if your city adds chlorine or chloramine by calling them or reading their water reports which can usually be found on their website. If your city adds chlorine we recommend using an inexpensive filter likethisto remove chlorine. If your city adds chloramine thenthisfilter will remove chloramine.

Can I grow my seedlings in my Tower Garden indoors?

No and yes. All of the seedlings we sell require UV light which they will normally absorb from the sun's ray. Most windows have UV filters on them which filter out the sun's UV rays. If you are going to grow the Tower Garden inside you will need to use supplemental lighting. An LED light kit will allow you to grow leafy greens and herbs. When plants flower and produce fruit (like tomatoes, strawberries, beans, peppers, eggplant, squash etc) they require a different color light that the LED lights do not provide. These sodium or metal halide lights are more expensive, heat up considerably more and use much more electricity than LED lights.

What is the green stuff on my seedlings?

Algae is a naturally occurring organism. When the nutrients in the Tower Tonic and sunlight meet, algae is the result.  To reduce algae growth on the rockwool cubes our seedlings are watered once a week with nutrient water. However algae can and will still still grow, especially on those seedlings that take longer to reach a shippable size. Algae does not mean the seedling is unhealthy, contaminated and need to be disposed of.

Do I need to remove the rubber band from the strawberries?

No, there is no need to remove the rubber band from around the strawberries

Where can I find crop specific Growing Guides?

Crop specific growin guides can be found on each of the seedling product pages. Additional resources may be found in our blog.

Can I start my own seeds indoors?

Yes but you will need supplemental light so that the seedlings do not stretch for the sunlight and become long and weak. A light kit like this LED Grow Light Kit will enable you to grow strong seedlings indoors.
